Vibram FiveFingers: Sprint-Male

There’s more to Running than meets the eye. Just as some folks enjoy Trail Running, Cross Country, Long Distance and so on, there is a school of runners who enjoy running barefoot.
I guess some folks really do run barefoot but if you’re not sure or don’t have the feet for it you can always grab a pair of “Vibram Five Fingers” shown here.
These are probably the strangest looking things I’ve seen, like gloves for your feet. I guess that makes traditional sneakers more like mittens for your feet. …

The God Bucket

I read an article recently which attempted to make the argument that religion and science are deep down intrinsically linked. You can read this article here [LINK].
The article is filled with logical fallacies, the most basic being the redefinition of “God”. Most faiths define god as a sentient super being, who hears our every thought. Something who must constantly be glorified. Who, when we die will weigh up the good deeds vs the bad deeds and punish us or reward us accordingly, for all eternity. The article re-defines …

HeyWhatsThat Path Profiler

I like to run and when I have the time I’ll run about 30-40 miles a month. There’s a couple of great free tools out there to help improve the analytics of your run. The first is appropriately named “MapMyRun.com”
Map My Run lets you draw your run on a Google Maps like map and measure the distance. It let’s you store your runs and share with others. This is nice as you can sometimes find a track in your area.
May My Run does a nice job but it …

The New Steve McQueen?

David Letterman made a comment a while back that Obama is cool, that he’s the 21st century Steve McQueen. He’s not far off here, especially compared to the last 200 years of presidents.
Take for example this iconic portrait taken during the campaigns. When McCain was canceling due to inclement weather, Obama was sporting a leather jacket in the snow and rallying voters. Now he’s playing basketball in the whitehouse? C’mon, who’s cooler than Obama?

Coin Tosses

My buddy Dan has a post on probability here [LINK]. I confess I never fully grasped probability in this sense. With a single coin toss heads has 50% chance and tails has 50% of coming up. It follows that with 10 coin tosses you’d expect 50% heads, 50% tails, and as things tend to an infinite number of tosses, actual results get closer to 50/50.
But what are the chances of getting 10 heads in a row? Fairly low, right? (how low I’ve no idea). So if I do 9 …

Obama Does the RIGHT Thing

Yesterday Obama lifted the 8 year ban on stem cell research imposed by the moronic conservative Bush administration [LINK].
Thank goodness we finally have someone with a brain who can discuss and understand the issues at a macro level.
Most conservative (christian pro-lifers) are shaking their heads at this news. Not me. Does that make me an evil liberal baby killer? Eh no. Let me tell you why this is a good thing and why you need to open your minds and understand the issues before blindly following the pro-life …

Twitter for Old Folks Homes

I had a great idea today. Here’s the thought process. It occurs to me that one of the biggest problems with old folks homes is the feeling of detachment. The “folks” are only visited once in a while but I’m sure it makes their day. Most of the time they’re not aware of what’s going on with their own families.
Now take the case of children’s hospitals. Robert Wood Johnson for example has some form of game console in every room. So why not some technology in old-folks’ homes?
If you …

Does Fate Exist? eh no.

CBS is running an article “Fate Steps In; He Misses Flight 3407” which states that if Paul Twaragowski’s connecting flight from Newark had been on time he’d have boarded the fatal flight to Buffalo which crashed last week.
Did Fate step in? Did something intervene to prevent Twaragowski from boarding the plane? Nope. It’s just the way things worked out.
When I was in my teens I was hit by a car whilst cycling to school. The car hit the front wheel of my bycicle and demolished it. I was plastered along …

Happy Birthday Darwin

Yesterday was Darwin’s birthday. Born 12 February 1809 in Shrewsbury he would’ve been 200 years old! Coincidentally Lincoln was born 200 years ago also!!! Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky, what are the chances?
Both men had fairly interesting lives but I think the overall achievement award has to go to Darwin. Arguably the single most important scientific contribution in the history of the planet: “The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection”.
To truly appreciate this man’s work you have to imagine what things were like back in 1859. …

Genetic Analysis is the Key to Curing Cancer – Part #3

Last time [LINK] I talked about cells and DNA and we covered some amazing facts like how many cells there are in the body (100 trillion) and how in each the human genome there are 3 billion instructions or base pairs. Amazing stuff.  This time I want to cover what DNA does. Why it the building block of all life? Again, this info is relatively new to me and some of it is probably wrong.
So DNA is sitting in the nucleus. It’s organized into chromosomes. A chromosome is essentially …
