Late last year I heard about a race called the “Ultra Mega Transect”. 26.2 cross-country trail miles, 6,000ft elevation change. It was mentioned in whispers on some FB groups I’m part of. Sounded interesting so I set a reminder to sign up. Registration opened 1/1/12 and was sold out within 90 minutes. No exaggeration. A good sign.
Well that was 9+ months ago and race-day is this weekend, the 29th. I have never run 26 miles on road. I’ve never hiked it either. My brothers-in-law Chris, Mike and Brad will all be running and it promises to be an awesome day.
“The Megatransect is a 26+ mile/hike and trail run event staged in Central Pennsylvania . The course is designed to challenge any trained or seasoned athlete. The recreational hiker or trail runner not looking to set any blistering personal records for the distance can also enjoy it equally. It is an event that focuses on the safety and needs of all entrants. Preparing is the key to success and even that is not guaranteed. Racing the course is not the objective, finishing strong is!”
In terms of preparation I think I’ve done about as much as I could’ve given the time constraints. I’ve put in a lot of miles both trail and road. Mostly road. Some long runs. Nothing crazy.
In terms of gear I’ll bring my trustee Radio Ruck along with a Camel Bak and some Ibuprofen 😉
I’m also going to try out some Inov-8 Roclite 315 shoes. These arrived last week and I’ve been breaking them in. I had been running with New Balance MT101 and Brooks Green Silence shoes which I like but they took a lot of getting used to. The New Balance are great but just not enough grip for these steep trails.
So far the Inov-8s are awesome. Lots of grip, no hotspots, ok flex but still good protection from the roots/stones etc. Way more shoe than I am used to but still pretty lightweight for what they are. My feet are not used to having so much cushion or support so I hope they don’t reject them. We shall see.
The weather forecast is good, 70s with a slight chance of rain. I’ve run in every kind of weather and really don’t mind a bit of rain. Either way we are in for some incredible scenery.
I have a few more light runs today/tomorrow, some swimming and working out to keep me occupied. Dreaming of rocks. Saturday can’t come soon enough.
